With technological interactions dominating most of our lives, agoraphobia is on the rise, especially in younger generations. People rely on texting and email, rather than making an audio call or meeting in person. People can do online banking, work remotely, order take-out via GrubHub, get groceries delivered using Instacart, and have just about anything dropped off at their door using Amazon — all in the comforts of their home. Entertainment streams through the TV, social media, and our video game systems. People no longer feel like meeting friends out because it’s easier just to grab their smartphone and a glass of wine and “socialize” in Facebook land or on Instagram, instead.

Technology has made it easier for us to live our lives behind closed doors. Although these modern conveniences give you instant gratification, they can impact your social skills and even foster social anxiety and agoraphobia.

Don’t Let Agoraphobia Get a Grip on You

Agoraphobia literally means “fear of the marketplace.” It’s an anxiety disorder in which you are afraid to the point that you avoid places or situations that may cause you panic due to feeling trapped, helpless, or embarrassed. Places that can present panic in someone with agoraphobia may include open spaces such as shopping centers, parties, restaurants, travelling, driving, public transit, or just being outside of home.

It can have a snowball effect: One bad experience can create a deep fear of the unfamiliar or uncomfortable situation until it escalates. It can get to the point where the sufferer avoids going to the location or situation, which feeds into the fear and grows it. The sufferer may eventually become crippled with fear and a shut-in.

Some symptoms of agoraphobia include sweating, difficulty concentrating, tiredness, muscular aches, heart palpitations, dizziness/lightheadedness, shaking, insomnia, depression, diarrhea/vomiting, and full-blown panic attacks. When a panic attack occurs, they feel powerless to control it.
